Iceland, a country with more magic than any other one for me. The country with the most artists compared to inhabitants on the world. The country where the people believe in elves and monsters.
I once had a longer talk with a young icelander, who was laughing at the beginning when i asked him if he also believes in all this. ‘No, the younger generation does not believe in this. It just something from the old generation. And those stories are nice to tell.’, he said. But half an hour later it slowly revealed that it was not exactly like that. He said,’There are many thing happening here, that you can’t explain just by normal meanings. There is more than that.’. It came out that a 100% sure that there are no elves and giants is no one there.
This little story captured for me perfectly this country. On the one hand really modern (and before the economic crisis also pretty rich, where no one really knew where it came from), but on the other hand so mystical and with more power of nature than i have felt anywhere else in the world. You start to understand why they believe in all this, even when there maybe is an explanation. For any place you come to there is a little mystic story about it. And there must be something bigger… Or it’s maybe just the feeling that we are so small as human beings and how much power and grace the nature on our planet has.
The short film was made for a presentation about a field trip to Iceland a couple of years ago, so there might be maybe a bit to much group action from time to time, but i still like it. The wonderful memory of a even more wonderful country.
