greenpeace: voices of change

Tomorrow the climate change conference in Copenhagen starts and with it the full caravan of politics, NGO’s and other ambassadors are coming to town. The hopes for the conference dropped in the last months quite a lot and the moment Obama said he will not come was a total downturn. Even when he is now coming for the last days and also most other world leaders are on their way, it is still unclear what the conference will bring for the future. Clear is that it’s time for a change and time for thinking differently about our planet, bringing that change together with taking action.

Climate Change will affect all of us in many ways, but it is pretty clear that especially the developing countrys will be the ones that will be hit the hardest. Extrem weather events, droughts and other consequences will lead into new conflicts and problems that could be seen now and for what there has to be a lot of different new programs for the future to fight that situation. If not it will push whole countrys in hunger and humanitarian crisis.

Earlier this year, i was in Kenya for the shortfilm about the effects of climate change for the people around Mt Kenya. This place is farmland, intensivly used by big companys. One of the major problems is now that the glaciers at Mt Kenya melted and the river flows from the glaciers, before the main inflow for the region, are coming to an end. Right now they use piped water, to minimize the loss of water on the way down but on the long run even that will not exist anymore. And thinking about the poor people with some small farmland, for them the piped water is barly affordable. And talking about a region like that, you might see the conflict potential, but at the same time this is not a region where it is really difficult. Thinking of other parts of the world, like Darfur for instance, these problems are way bigger and also now one of the main reason for the happening ethnic cleansing in the region.

Below is a short ad, Philip Bloom shot for Greenpeace in Dehli, India. Just to give you another short inside look into the problems appearing with the effects of climate change.
